Hinting at … Fiction

Only two days to go until the Hint Fiction workshop I’ll be teaching at Enid Public Library with Peggy Chambers. Want to read some?

Hint fiction is a tiny story – 25 words maximum (not including the title). I’ve been writing some today, and preparing to ‘teach’ this technique of story. The idea is that the piece hints at a much bigger tale, but provides enough of a sense of story to intrigue the reader.

Here’s what I have come up with so far:

OLD FLAME

Heart fluttering, I watched him smile across the restaurant as Nick sauntered to the bathroom. Meet me outside, now. The waiter delivered my napkin note.

NOTE WITH NEWBORN

I come without instructions. You will make mistakes, lose sleep, worry.  I am fragile right now, but my eyes and heart are stuffed with love.

24-Hours WITH A FRUIT FLY

Fly. Eat. Fly more. Annoy humans. Find fruit. Eat. Fly in circles. Find mate. Lay eggs. Eat lots. Next time, I’ll be a dog. Die.

NEEDED: NEW BARBER

Um. Are your bangs even? What color IS that called? Didn’t know frizz was ‘in.’ You’re not going out with me like that, are you?

—–

DRONE WITH A CAMERA

What’s that horrible smell? Just fly your drone fast twenty feet above ground, over my neighbor’s yard. …  Dial 9-1-1.  Wonder how long he’s been dead?

What do you think? I’d like to know your thoughts on Hint Fiction. Please comment, here or on my website, http://www.marycoley.com.

I have to credit a great little book a friend gave me recently for the ideas I used in coming up with this fiction: 642 TINY THINGS To WRITE ABOUT is from http://www.chroniclebooks.com.
